For Our Children

“Then David gave to Solomon his son the pattern of the porch, and of the houses thereof, and of the treasuries thereof, and of the upper chambers thereof, and of the inner parlours thereof, and of the place of the mercy seat,….”

1 Chronicles 28:11

The great king David wanted to build the Temple where the Ark of the Covenant would remain. God had told him that because he was a man of war he would not be the one to build such a place, but that rather his son Solomon would be in charge of this task. Here we have David passing on to Solomon just how the House of the Lord was to be built. Much like an architect might pass on blueprints to the craftsman so that the building is built following guidelines and specifications, he was passing on that which he says in a latter verse was written upon him by the hand of God.

As parents, we too have been given a pattern or blueprints that we pass on to our children. We endeavor to help them build their lives following this pattern. This is also given to us in writing by the hand of God. It is by his guiding hand, and through his Word, that we would early teach them all that pertains to the Law and the Gospel. Paul wrote to Timothy in his second letter to him that “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”

It is early in David’s instructions, that he tells his son of the place of the Mercy seat. This is perhaps the most important thing for us to tell our children. This is where the “instructions in righteousness” that Paul was talking about comes in. This place to where they can turn when the Law has done its work and sin becomes exceedingly sinful. This place where they can find forgiveness for their sin and the peace which passes understanding. That they would be able to present their bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God.

These bodies that were created in His image, and that despite all that we have done to build this house, it is vain unless the Lord keeps it. He has provided an access to this Mercy seat for all who would believe that the blood sprinkled on it during the Old Covenant and the blood that poured out upon it on Calvary was that of our Saviors who was slain before the foundation of the world.

This is the pattern that Our Heavenly Father has handed over to us. A plan that involved the sacrificing of his son who would not stay dead but would rise again and sit on his fathers right hand making intercession for us.

Praise God for his unspeakable mercies to us in Christ Jesus!
