God’s Providence

Genesis 1:14 (KJV) “And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:” We have such a blessing in this written Word of God. Whenever we feel the pressures of our day to day lives, or we have uncertainty about the future, we have a sure place to turn to. While the first chapter of Genesis may seem like just a historical account of creation, it is so much more than that.

What a comfort we find in the providence of God. He doesn’t leave anything out while he is creating us. He isn’t like the baker that forgets to add an ingredient while baking and the bread doesn’t turn out. Everything he does is with us in mind and done perfectly. He knew even then the experiences each and every one of us would experience in our journey.

One of my favorite quotes was written by Jean-Baptiste Lacordaire. It says; “All that I know about tomorrow is that Providence will rise before the sun”. This quote was on the computer screens in every hospital room in the maternity ward where our children were born. At first I wanted to critique it in my mind by saying that God never sleeps so his care for us was always there, but then I realized that the author wasn’t implying otherwise. He was just reminding us that whether we realize it or not. Whether we are awake or not God is ready for us. During creation he set things in order. He established the seasons. He established the days and years. As we move forward from this year and into the next one we can be assured that his providence is going before us to care for every step we take.

We then can sing what the songwriter has written:

1- Each step I take my Saviour goes before me,

And with His loving hand He leads the way,

And with each breath I whisper “I adore Thee;”

Oh, what joy to walk with Him each day.

Refrain: Each step I take I know that He will guide me;

To higher ground He ever leads me on.

Until some day the last step will be taken.

Each step I take just leads me closer home.

2- At times I feel my faith begin to waver,

When up ahead I see a chasm wide.

It’s then I turn and look up to my Saviour,

I am strong when He is by my side.

3- I trust in God, no matter come what may,

For life eternal in His hand,

He holds the key that opens up the way,

That will lead me to the promised land.

Praise God for his unspeakable mercies toward us!
