Heroes of Faith

I read once where someone said, “Don’t let your head hit the pillow without your nose in The Word”. Our natural minds will sometimes chafe against this kind of advice. This is probably because we recognize that too often we haven’t heeded it. I have found myself in life being consumed with things other than reading God’s Word. These things most often aren’t in and of themselves wrong to do, but the fact of the matter is that I can always find other things to do.

The Psalm writer wrote in Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God:”. This well-known verse follows one where he writes that God “maketh wars to cease“. So often we live our lives as if we are at war. Scurrying from one thing to the next, reacting to what life throws at us. There seems to be a constant onslaught of voices telling us what we should do, or where we should go. Instead it would be good if we could all quiet ourselves daily before His Word.

  I won’t forget the many times I entered my grandparents house to hear my grandmother reading the Bible to my grandfather who was almost blind.  He had lost the ability himself to read and meditate, but how thankful he was to have a wife that loved the Word as he did and was willing to read it to him.  They lived a simple life without much worldly wealth, but they had wealth beyond compare in the Word who was made flesh.  Their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 

A lot of us have these examples in life. Those we look up to as “heroes” of the faith. Most often when we really develop a relationship with them, they will share that they recognize they are just poor sinners in need of a savior. They know that they can only find Him in the holy Word of God. It is to God’s Word we too must turn, so that we can along with David say “ thy word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee”
