“It is Finished”

Writer: Seattle ALCSeattle ALC

Jesus spoke these final words from the Cross, “It is finished”.  There was another day of silence.  It must have been a long day for the disciples.  Scripture tells us that they did not still know the promise that He would rise again.  They had heard, because many times Jesus had spoken to them about what He had come to do.  How many times do we hear, but not listen.  Because there is silence, it doesn’t mean that our God is not there.  He is omnipresent, through His Son, He tells us:

“I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” Matthew 28:20

The Psalmist has given us some marvelous advice.  In the middle of all of our hearing about this wonderful message of the Gospel.  Hearing, reading, and singing the account of the humility of this Jesus who is the Christ.  How He chose to suffer as He did in the Garden of Gethsemane, bearing the entire sin of the world.  How He chose to be silent before His accusers, as they attempted to convict Him with false testimony.  How, because of His great Love for all of humanity, He chose the Cross instead of legions of angels to free him.  How He bore it all alone, even when those closest to Him disappeared into the night, the silent night.  The psalmist wrote:

“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10

As I write this, it is morning in Jerusalem.  The day of Resurrection dawning.  Jesus saw this day before it dawned as he hung on the Cross.  He saw it for you and for me, “It is finished”.  Because He arose victorious, our debt has been paid in full.  He calls for us out of the silence, as He called Mary on that Resurrection morning.  He knows your name, because He loves you with an everlasting love.  Faith is the vehicle that transports us, brings us from the silence to the portals of heaven itself.  “Therefore being justified by faith we have peace with God” as Paul wrote in Romans 5.  May you truly listen to those that have been witness for nearly two thousand years.  He is Risen!  He’s Alive!  May your praise resound to the Glory of God!
